When God Begins to Restore What Was Broken

When God Begins to Restore What Was Broken

Earlier this month, my phone rang, and I heard a voice that I never thought I would hear again.

It was my mom.

We had not spoken in 15 years.

If you have ever walked through a painful family relationship, you know there are stories with layers. This is one of those stories.

My mom has spent most of her life struggling with what appears to be an undiagnosed personality disorder. Growing up, our home was filled with instability, fear, and emotional wounds. My brother and I experienced it in different ways, but both of us carried the weight of it into adulthood.

As we got older, we faced a difficult truth. Loving her did not mean allowing the chaos to continue. Since she refused help, we chose to love her from a distance. It was the healthiest choice we knew how to make.

What followed was a long season of healing.

There were counseling appointments, honest conversations, tears, prayers, and many moments where I asked God to help me understand what forgiveness looked like. At one point, I remember asking Him, "How do I honor my mother when so much of my story with her has been painful?"

The answer settled deep in my heart.

Love her. Pray for her. Honor her by being the mother to your daughter that she was unable to be for you.

Those words guided me for years.

Forgiveness did not happen in a single moment. It took time. Healing from childhood trauma often does. Yet God stayed faithful through every step.

This year, my uncle moved my mom into an assisted living facility after her dementia progressed. Last Saturday, I sent her flowers and her favorite chocolates. I felt compassion for her. I felt grief for the losses she has experienced.

Then my phone rang.

She had somehow gotten my number from the florist.

We talked.

For the first time in a long time, the conversation felt calm. There was no tension. No conflict. No confusion. We simply talked.

I sat there afterward trying to process what had happened.

For years, I prayed for healing in our relationship. For years, I asked God to bring restoration where there had been so much hurt. Along the way, I also accepted the possibility that I might never hear the apology I once hoped for. With dementia now affecting her memory, that possibility feels even more distant.

Yet God has been teaching me something important.

Grace is not built on receiving what we feel we are owed.

Grace is choosing love when bitterness would be easier.

Grace is trusting God with the parts of our story that still feel unfinished.

Colossians 3:13 says, "Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

Those words sound simple. Living them often takes years.

I do not know what happens next. I do not know whether this conversation marks the beginning of something new or stands as a single unexpected gift.

What I do know is this.

God still heals hearts.

God still answers prayers in ways we never expect.

God still brings peace into places that once held pain.

Sometimes healing arrives quietly. Sometimes it arrives through a phone call you never expected to receive.

When it does, take a moment to thank Him for His grace.
